Progress is being made on both sides of the river on the I-270 bridge replacement. The first steel girders for the new bridge were constructed and put in place at the end of November (pictured). Bridge substructure work continues in the river; however, extremely low water levels are making access difficult for three piers near the river bank on the west (Missouri) side. In Illinois, eastbound pavement operations, along with temporary pavement placement, continues. In Missouri, construction activities continue on the Riverview Drive interchange ramps. Earthwork and drainage systems, along with temporary pavement, are currently under construction in the existing I-270 median. Construction progress has the project on schedule.

Construction is progressing on both sides of the Mississippi River. Ongoing Illinois roadway work includes constructing a westbound lane & shoulder in addition to constructing a shoulder associated with the eastbound lanes. River bridge construction over the Illinois flood plain is progressing with the placement of pier caps on several piers of the eastbound structure. Work in the river near the Illinois bank is progressing; however, extremely low river levels are complicating river work near the Missouri bank. Ongoing Missouri roadway work near Riverview Drive and I-270 is expected to include construction of temporary pavement required to keep I-270 open to traffic. A temporary barrier wall will be placed along I-270 near Riverview Drive to protect workers and allow for the removal of guardrail in this vicinity.

Construction of Illinois land-based foundations continue, and you will see them above ground this summer. River foundation work is progressing. Below-water foundation drilling is ongoing, with the first concrete pour in the Mississippi River expected in late May. Earthwork placement for the eastbound Riverview Drive interchange entrance ramp to the new River Structure is ongoing in Missouri. This work requires the ongoing closure of the entrance ramp from Riverview Drive to eastbound I-270. Missouri land-based River bridge foundation work is also progressing.

Lanes on I-270 between Riverview Drive and IL 3 will be restricted nightly beginning Monday, March 27 at 9:00 PM for road repairs. All lanes will be open daily by 5:00 AM. Work is scheduled through the end of June. One lane in each direction will remain open at all times. Additionally, to accommodate advance work, traffic will be reduced to one lane on Eastbound I-270 beginning Saturday, March 25 at 5:00 AM. All lanes are expected to reopen at Monday, March 27 at 5:00 AM.

Lanes on I-270 Eastbound between Riverview Drive and IL 3 will be restricted nightly beginning Monday, March 20 at 9:00 PM for pavement striping. All lanes will be open daily by 5:00 AM. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the week. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and obey all traffic signage.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced a ramp closure from Riverview Drive to Eastbound I-270.

Motorists who enter Eastbound I-270 from Riverview Drive should note, the entrance ramp will be closed beginning Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00 AM. The ramp will remain closed through July 2024.

Crews will be closing the ramp for construction of the new Riverview interchange at I-270 and the construction of the new Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi River.

There will be signed detours for the closure. Motorists on Riverview Drive wishing to travel Eastbound on I-270 will be detoured to Westbound I-270, exit at Lilac Avenue, go left over the Lilac Avenue bridge, and exit back onto Eastbound I-270. The detour is approximately two miles.

Construction activities are underway for the I-270 New Mississippi River Bridge. Walsh Construction is preparing to begin the construction of the proposed bridge substructure. The first substructures are expected to be poured later in February. IDOT and MoDOT are excited to announce the construction contract for the I-270 Mississippi River Bridge Replacement and Riverview Drive Interchange project has been awarded to Chicago-based Walsh Construction. Walsh Construction is part of The Walsh Group, a 124-year-old family-owned company providing construction services throughout the transportation, building and water markets. Walsh Construction is the second largest bridge builder in the US, as ranked by Engineering News-Record, and has previously worked on major river bridge structures in the St. Louis area, including the I-270 over Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge replacement for IDOT, Blanchette Bridge rehabilitation and I-64 Daniel Boone Bridge design-build projects for MoDOT, and Merchants Bridge rehabilitation for Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA). The MoDOT and IDOT contracts were both executed on August 23, 2022. The contractor will begin preparing for construction by bringing in their equipment and materials, and construction will begin soon.
